WILLIAM B. LIF

WILLIAM B. LIF (1872-December 14, 1938)
            He was born in a town near Vilna, Lithuania.  He came to the United States as a young boy.  He studied in a high school and was later active in the Jewish labor movement in New York.  He was a cofounder of the Forverts (Forward) in 1897 and of Louis Miller’s Di varheyt (The truth) in 1907, in which he began his journalistic activities.  In 1912 he settled in Philadelphia and was active in Jewish public schools of the Jewish National Labor Alliance.  During and after WWI, he worked in aid relief in Philadelphia and in the local division of the American Jewish Congress.  From 1914 he was an internal contributor and for a time also editor of Di idishe velt (The Jewish world) in Philadelphia.  He died in Philadelphia.
