YANKEV LEYZEROVITSH

YANKEV LEYZEROVITSH (b. February 29, 1911)
            He was born in Grodno, Russian Poland, the son of a tailor.  During WWI he was evacuated with his family to Elizavetgrad, southern Russia, and after the war he lived in Grodno, Warsaw, and Vilna.  He graduated from the Tarbut high school in Grodno and went on to study in the history department at Warsaw University and the Judaic Institute.  For his Master’s degree he wrote on the history of Jews in Grodno from antiquity until 1795.  After graduating from university, he worked as a teacher in Yiddish-Hebrew and Yiddish-Polish schools.  He also worked as a theater reviewer for the Warsaw daily newspaper Unzer ekspres (Our express).  He was in the fifth group of YIVO researchers in Vilna (1940); his research topic was: “Di geshikhte fun veltlekher bildung bay yidn in rusland in der ershter helft fun 19tn yorhundert” (The history of secular education among Jews in Russia in the first half of the nineteenth century).  Further information about him remains unknown.
